There are several key studies that have documented the extent of co-occurring mental and physical illness. The TEN Project is building on this current evidence to support additional research across several areas. This research and subsequent publications will serve to advance knowledge in the field about the prevalence of the issue and the specific needs of this population, as well as generate practical solutions to overcoming barriers to care.
The TEN Project:
- Commissioned a study to characterize the clinical, demographic and economic patterns of patients and treatment for the dually eligible.
- Prepared and submitted a manuscript to a leading medical journal addressing barriers to reimbursement for psychiatric care of medically ill patients.
- Was invited to provide a commentary on issues of access and reimbursement in the journal Psycho-oncology.
The TEN Project activities in development include:
- Writing a series of policy papers that address the needs of dually eligible mentally ill individuals including a review of the clinical characteristics and therapeutic needs and available treatments for this patient group.
- Monitoring the clinical and administrative impact of Medicare Part D on mentally ill individuals
- Evaluating third-party payer practices regarding access to psychiatric care for physically ill patients
